ORLANDO

ORLANDO is a new electro-folk musical inspired by Virginia Woolf’s seminal novel of the same name that was first published nearly 100 years ago.

A young poet changes gender and lives for nearly 300 years in this whirlwind tale of romance and betrayal, using flourishes of poetry and satire to explore queer identity and the ease with which individuals can exist between binaries. Featuring five performers who all play the title character, this innovative theatrical and musical event is not to be missed.

This project was previously developed as part of Antipodes Theatre Company's inaugural 2020 Winter Lab, the 2021 Abbotsford Convent’s Pivot program, and premiered in November 2023.

Our Method

Our concept of ‘The FLUID Musical’ not only pays tribute to Virginia’s work, but amplifies the lived experience of our cast by workshopping the material and plot directly with and for them. By creating scenes and songs through improvisation, we inject personal lived experience into ours and Virginia’s narrative, with a focus on creativity and collaboration.

This method came from the desire to initiate change on the issues of access and representation in Music Theatre. The Music Theatre industry currently has little opportunity to give actors artistic autonomy and creative voice. We want to change that. We want to give actors respect as artists, and honour their lived experience. In order to celebrate and uplift humanity, the musicals we write should, at the core of their creation, be valuing us and our stories.

  • Rachel Lewindon

    She/Her

    COMPOSER AND MUSICAL DIRECTOR

    An award-winning composer, sound designer, pianist and musical director. Her sound palette has developed from her classical piano background with contemporary influences of voice, processive ensemble work and timbral electronic synthesis. She is thrilled to have had her work premiered both internationally and nationally as well as enjoying frequenting the local parks with her canine companion, Henry.   • Willow Sizer

    They/Them

    WRITER (IN COLLABORATION WITH THE CAST)

    An emerging queer creative and actor. They are a  multi-Green Room Award nominee including;  ‘Best Year’s Work’ encompassing their work in 2019; playing Paulette in Legally Blonde (James Terry Collective), Pearl White in Ghost Quartet (Antipodes Theatre Co). Their cabaret, Death of a Demi Diva, was also nominated for Best Original Music and Best Music Direction. Most recently, Willow performed at the 2022 Brisbane Festival in a month-long residency focussed on community activation and empowerment with Finucane and Smith’s Travelling Dance Hall and starred as Medea in Steven Mitchell-Wright’s Medea: Out of the Mouths of Babes at TheatreWorks.

  • Margot Fenley

    DIRECTOR

    Margot is an actor, intimacy professional, director, devisor and educator, originally trained as an actor at the VCA. She has performed with MTC, State Theatre Company of South Australia, Arts Centre Melbourne, La Mama, and fortyfive downstairs, amongst others, as well as in various tv series. Margot trained as an intimacy professional with IDC (USA) through an MEAA-Equity Foundation scholarship, and works as such in stage, screen and educational contexts. Margot has had an extensive teaching career, both in Melbourne and the USA. She is represented by Ian White Management and has been a member of Actor’s Equity. https://margotfenley.com

  • Maude Davey

    She/Her

    DRAMATURG

    Maude trained as an actor at VCA and has worked as an actor, director and writer for more than twenty-five years, with her primary focus being the creation of new work. Her latest work as Director/Producer has been Gender Euphoria: Mighty Real, for Arts Centre Melbourne and Sydney World Pride. Recent acting credits: Blessed Union (Belvoir), The Heartbreak Choir (MTC), Melancholia (Green Room Award, Malthouse). In 2019 she appeared in Anthem for Arts Centre Melbourne at the Melbourne, Sydney and Perth Festivals.

  • Kuda Mapeza

    She/They

    CASTING & CULTURAL CONSULTANT

    As an interdisciplinary world builder, the limit does not exist for theatre-maker, director, writer, actor, musician and cultural consultant Kuda Mapeza. After being awarded with the John Bell Scholarship in 2017, Kuda relocated to Naarm/Melbourne, where they acted in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (Michael Cassel Group); Emilia (Essential Theatre); Invisible Opera (Sophia Braus/RISING); sensory theatre show When the World Turns (Polyglot Theatre); along with commercial work. Through experiences as an actor, Kuda began fiercely broadening their skillset - assistant directing Melbourne Theatre Company’s Is God Is (2023), working with Western Edge Youth Arts as a Support Artist/Assistant Director on shows such as Time’s Ticking (2022) and Distortion (2022), and creating, devising and performing their original piece YUKYUH with Let’s Take Over (Darebin Arts/2023). In 2020, due to the political state of the world, and in turn, the arts sector, Kuda was propelled to study and facilitate workshops on the history of race and cultural diversity in a multitude of international and intersectional contexts, aiding in the furthering of cultural and intersectional literacy in the arts sector. Kuda continues to use their multiple ways of knowing to create multisensory, culturally-informed and experimental arts experiences for collaborators and audiences alike.

  • Mx Chels Morgan

    They/Xe

    CULTURAL CONSULTANT

    Mx. Chels Morgan, CSE - is an Afro-Latinx, Neuroexpansive, and Queer sexuality and social justice educator, cultural competency specialist, and intimacy director & coordinator. Chels is an AASECT Certified Sexuality Educator (CSE) as well as a Certified Holistic Sexuality Educator (CHSE) via the Institute for Sexuality Education and Enlightenment (ISEE) and has additional training by the ANTE UP! Virtual Freedom Professional Development School for Justice Workers in the history, implementation, and troubleshooting of various justice frameworks related to the sexuality field.

    Chels has an extensive background in film, television, theater, dance and circus and is currently pursuing a Masters of Fine Arts in Film and Television Production from Loyola Marymount University with a specialization in Directing Fiction (as of 2022). Their intimacy and cultural competency work has been featured at the New York Theatre Workshop (Off-Broadway), on the AllBlk Streaming Platform (an AMC Network), at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance as well as at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), National Film Festival for Talented Youth (NFFTY) and Black Film Festival Atlanta. Currently, they are serving as the Director of Curriculum for the first annual Global Majority Intimacy Theatre Conference in New Orleans, LA. Overall, Chels'  career focus is to spread narratives of radical humanity and radical self compassion, and to curate justice-centered and emboldening spaces on screen, on stage and in their communities through media.

  • Brandon Pape

    ARTIST DIRECTOR & PRODUCER

    Brandon directed the Australian Premiere of 'Ghost Quartet' (two 2020 Green Room Award Nominations, return season in 2021) and co-directed with Trudy Dunn their immersive reimagining of ‘Guys and Dolls’ at Chapel Off Chapel in August 2023. Other Antipodes credits include Sam Martin's 'Sam I Am' (sold out season at La Mama, Victorian Premiere), 'And She Would Stand Like This' (Australian Premiere), 'Passing Strange' (Australian Premiere, five 2023 Green Room Award Nominations), and the Winter Lab - Antipodes' annual development program for new work and bold ideas.

  • Cameron Steens

    NEW WORK MANAGER & PRODUCER

    A Naarm/Melbourne based multidisciplinary theatre maker, WAAPA music theatre graduate and all-round creative.

    Cameron is known for their keen interest in new work, has run multiple creative and networking programs - supporting artists in all stages of their careers, and has established themself as an excellent programmer having leased theatres for Gasworks Arts Park. In 2023, they were appointed as the first New Work Manager for Antipodes Theatre Company.

  • Ashleigh Walwyn

    RESIDENT STAGE MANAGER

    A stage, Production, and Company Manager, originally from the UK. She grew up and found her love for theatre in Malaysia before graduating from VCA. Credits include ASM for Mr Burns, a post-electric play (Lighting Jar Theatre), Special Events Stage Manager for MICF, Senior Stage Manager/Back of House Caller for Victorian State Schools Spectacular (Dir.     Marty trained at VCA and made their professional stage debut in In The Heights (Blue Saint Productions, Hayes Theatre, Helpmann nomination), going on to perform in Bring It On (David Venn Enterprises), Rent (James Terry Collective), and Spamalot (One Eyed Man Productions) and Hamilton (Michael Cassel Group, Sydney Theatre Award). TV credits include Bump and The Feed.

  • Louie Dalzell

    He/him

    CAST & COLLABORATOR

    Louie is a National Theatre trained actor and singer, and enjoys creating lively and contemporary theatre. Theatre credits include How Long Is A Piece Of String? (Live Witness Theatre), Unsorted (dir. Tara Daniel), The Dark Web (Bottled Snail Productions), and the short film Bindings (Seb Bardouille-Thompson). Cabaret credits include T4t: a Transgender Showcase (prod. Olly Lawrence, Melbourne Fringe), Winter Showcase (Melbourne Actors Guild), What’s Next?   • Manali Datar

    CAST & COLLABORATOR

    An Indian-born singer, actor, writer and musician who grew up in Meanjin (Brisbane). After graduating from VCA in 2018, Manali originated the role of Rose Granger-Weasley in the Australian production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Manali is currently working on her screenplay, her solo music projects as well as writing with her band, Ultrafine. She now lives and works on Wurundjeri land and acknowledges that sovereignty was never ceded. 

  • Willow Sizer

  • Kikki Temple

    She/Goddess

    CAST & COLLABORATOR

    A Maori playwright, actress and artist. Takatāpui (she/her), Kikki is making moves in Naarm and is proving to be one of the most important voices in her field making art with a Pasifika voice. Based on Boonwurrung country, her notable works include And She Would Stand Like This (Antipodes) and BURGERZ (Theatreworks). She is currently writing two new works being staged in 2024.
