Newlyweds Darren and Janet want nothing more than to build the perfect life together. But when Janet gives birth to a baby with both male and female genitalia, they find themselves in the unlikely position of having to choose a gender for their child—all while competing with the perfect couple next door and dealing with a misunderstood family dog—in this hilarious battle of the sexes.
Runtime: 2 hours, with one interval
Reading presentations are followed by a brief Q&A session with the creatives.
Recommended for audiences: 12+, parental discretion is advised.

Laura Zlatos

WRITER
Laura is a New York-based playwright and librettist. Her plays include The Even More Lamentable Tragedy of Lavinia (2020 Women are Funny Prize), The Blue Whale (2019 Dr. R.J. Rodriguez Emerging Playwrights Contest, 2nd Place; 2020 O'Neill Playwrights Conference, Semifinalist), Happily After Ever (2017 Woodward/Newman Drama Award; 59E59 Theaters; Edinburgh Fringe Festival; Bloomington Playwrights Project; The Advocate's Top 10 NY Theater of 2016, Honorable Mention), Three Hours (HERE Arts Center), Exposure (Gene Frankel Theatre), and the musical A Problem with the Pattersons (2020 O'Neill Music Theatre Conference, Semifinalist) with lyricist/composer Andre Catrini. She was a finalist for the Princess Grace Award, the Jerome Fellowship, and the Core Writer Program at the Playwrights’ Center. Laura is a member of New Perspective Theatre Company's 2020 Women's Work Short Play Lab, The Orchard Project’s 2019-2020 Greenhouse, and was a resident playwright with the Exquisite Corpse Company. She received an MFA in Playwriting from Columbia University and an MA in Performance Studies from NYU.

Shamita Siva

DIRECTOR
Shamita is a multi-faceted performer and director who enjoys choreographing and devising new work. Trained in dance from an early age, after over 16 years of multiple dance styles, she developed an interest in forms such as Butoh alongside her acting. After completing her BA Performing Arts, she continued on to Stella Adler Los Angeles, and Film and Television Studios international. Shamita is a keen writer and director, and is popularly consulted for movement direction. She often incorporates intercultural practices and cross disciplinary elements into her work, inspired by everyday experiences, music and sound, and socio- political issues she is fueled by.

Aurnab As-Saber

Aurnab As-Saber is a Melbourne-based actor, standup comedian and r'n'b singer with the stage alias SVBER. Originally from an electrical engineering background, he has undertaken the bulk of his screen acting training at The Rehearsal Room, American accent training at Brave Studios, vocal SLS training at Jaanz Academy, and is currently completing a diploma of music production at SAE Institute. He has appeared in numerous short and student films along with a number of commercials, most recently Kmart Christmas 2019. He is also performing in the independent musical theatre production The Sri Lankan Fire Team the Power of Song in late 2020.

Anthony Craig

Since graduating from MT at the Qld Con in 2014, Anthony has been performing in a big ol’ bunch of stuff. Some credits from the past year are Alice in Wonderland (Rapidfire International), Twelfth Night (Melb. Shakespeare Company), Sunday in the Park with George (Watch This), upcoming feature film Lone Wolf (Jonathan Ogilvie), and Bright Star (Pursued by Bear). He recently got a 2020 Green Room Award nom for his performance in Private Peaceful (Moving Light Productions). This quarantine season he’ll be playing the banjo, learning the harmonica (Sorry neighbours), and looking after his three snails (Binky & the Boys).

Emma Jevons studied at The National Theatre Drama School and has further trained with Patsy Rodenburg and Rowna Balos. Her screen work includes How To Stay Married (Network 10), the short film God Moving (Jeremy Teh), and the upcoming feature Some Happy Day (Christine Hill). Her theatre credits include Melbourne Shakespeare Company’s Taming Of The Shrew, Love's Labours' Lost and Romeo and Juliet. Other theatre credits include Hedda Gabler Gabler Gabler (Papermouth Theatre Company/La Mama), Cracked Smiles (Thatcher's Boy Theatre) and The Adventures Of Yoni 1 And Yoni 2 (Simone French).

Joseph Lai

Joseph Lai is an actor, writer, dancer and singer. He studied musical theatre at the Space and the VCA. Performance highlights include the role of Michael in Todd in Venice (La Mama Theatre) and Emily Dickinson in The Ultimate Lesbian Double Feature (for the Midsumma & Mardi Gras festival). Recently he wrote, produced and starred in the comedy Abciouxeloutely which had a successful season at The Butterfly Club. He frequently writes, choreographs and performs original cabaret shows with creative partner Charlotte Righetti, their Raglan Revue! shows are a regular attraction at Club Voltaire. Ursula Searle

Ursula Searle is not your typical triple threat performer, instead specializing in opera, comedy and musical theatre. Most recently, she performed on Adam Perryman’s LIVE: From Your Living Room, and late last year performed, directed and stage managed at the Berlin Opera Academy. Whilst in Berlin, Ursula performed in Berlin Musicals’ Songs for a New World where she received critical praise for her acting and vocal talent. Ursula has performed at multiple Melbourne festivals (MICF and Fringe), most notably in the show Pining for Affection: a Tree Musical. Ursula is excited to be back in Melbourne and is thrilled to be represented by Ian White Management.
